What is SCAR ?

SCAR stands for Skibbereen Charity Adventure Race, a multi-discipline adventure race based in and around the beautiful landscape of Skibbereen, West Cork, Ireland.

Who organises SCAR ?

SCAR is managed by a special race team on behalf of Skibbereen Lions Club. The Lions Club is a charitable organisation comprising volunteers from the local community. We organise fundraising events for local good causes.

How long has SCAR been taking place ?

2024 will be our 11th year and in that time we’ve seen hundreds of competitors test their stamina and enjoy the satisfaction competing one of courses whilst also raising money for good causes.

Why is SCAR different from other events ?

One important factor differentiates SCAR from other events – it is a NOT FOR PROFIT event and all race entry fees will be donated 100% TO LOCAL CHARITIES and good causes in the area. SCAR is an adventure race like no other with c€280k donated to good causes and charities since the first race 11 years ago. We’re quite proud of that !

How many courses are there to choose from ?

There are two courses, the Taster and Sport courses. As the name suggests the Taster course is for people who want to try an adventure race for the first time perhaps or who prefer the shorter distances. Sport is our longer and more challenging course which sees both regular adventure racers as well as those looking to challenge themselves taking part.

Must I do the Kayak ?

No, you may skip the kayak, and your timing chip will have a default time assigned.

Can we participate as a relay team ?

Yes; only in Taster, and both members of the team must register for SCAR. On the day, one will complete the bike, one will complete the run, and either one, both, or neither may do the kayak.

Where does SCAR take place ?

Starting and finishing from Castlehaven GAA, just outside Skibbereen, the courses go through surrounding villages, such as Castletownshend, along coastal roads with stunning sea views as far as the famous Fastnet Rock. The routes also include Europe’s largest saltwater lake, and Ireland’s first marine reserve, Lough Hyne. We also throw in a few ‘lovely’ hills too !

Where do I start and finish on the day ?

SCAR starts and finishes at Castlehaven GAA grounds, Moneyvollahane, just outside Skibbereen. Car parking, bike racking, registration, race briefings and post race presentations, food/drink all take place here. Thank you to Castlehaven GAA for generously making their superb facilities available for SCAR each year.

SCAR is delighted that Carbery continues to support our event as our headline sponsor and race partner. Carbery Group first came on board as main sponsor for SCAR in 2017 and are a global leader in food ingredients, flavours and cheese and have their head office in Ballineen, West Cork just a few miles from where SCAR takes place. Over the years many Carbery employees have taken part in SCAR and we look forward to seeing them again this year ! For more information about Carbery Group visit www.carbery.com

In addition The Southern Star are our longstanding local media partner and Castlehaven GAA are our valued host location for the start and finish of SCAR (see below).

Don’t let the fact that we are a charity based adventure race lull you into a false sense of security ! SCAR will deliver beginners, intermediates and expert racers a serious challenge that will test and push you to compete and complete this professionally organised and truly memorable course in this unique part of south west Ireland. So what are you waiting for ? Earn your SCAR in 2024, experience the wonders of West Cork and help good causes at the same time.

Our amazing marshals

SCAR wouldn’t be possible without the help of our amazing team of marshals and volunteers. We think our marshals are the friendliest, ‘smiliest’ and most helpful set of marshals in adventure racing…and you will too ! Above all they are there to make sure everyone gets round the course safely and enjoyably. Thank you to everyone who volunteers to help us with SCAR and we ask all our competitors to treat our volunteers with courtesy.

SCAR is a ‘leave no trace’ event

West Cork is a beautiful place and we’re lucky to be able to host our event each year for everyone to enjoy. Please take all your litter home with you or dispose of it in our bins at Castlehaven GAA. Please don’t drop anything including wrappers or bottles etc. along the course.
